Obituary of Rocco R. Sgro

Rocco "Rocky" Richard Sgro, Jr., age 89, of Glen Mills, PA, and formerly of Aston, PA, passed peacefully at home on Friday, March 1, 2013. Rocky was born at home in Marcus Hook, PA, to the late Rocco Richard and Anna (Ditto) Sgro. Rocky attended Eddystone High School, graduating in the Class of 1942. After graduation, he worked as a machinist with Westinghouse, until he turned 18, and then joined his three elder brothers, who were serving in various branches of the military. Rocky was a World War II, US Navy Veteran and was stationed in the South Pacific. After the war, Rocky returned to Westinghouse, where he worked for 40 years, until his retirement in 1982. Rocky loved sports and was an avid bowler. He played in local bowling leagues from the 1950's until he was 85. Rocky was awarded many bowling trophies over the years, including one for a perfect game. In 1961, he attained the title of "Mr. White Sands" of the former White Sands Swim Club in Aston, PA. He enjoyed watching the Philadelphia Eagles, but he loved baseball and was a faithful Phillies fan and never missed a game. Rocky also was a very good dancer, and was a member of a Square Dance Club for many years. He especially loved playing pinochle with family and friends, and the good times they had joking how someone "had to cheat" if they were winning. Rocky's grandchildren and great grandchildren will always remember him for the amazing card tricks he showed them. Rocky loved the seashore and spent many happy times in Avalon, NJ, with his friend, Betty and her family. Most of all, he was a very gentle, kind, and loving father, pop-pop, brother, and friend, who will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. Rocky was the father of the late Rocco J.; brother of the late Carman, Joe, Sam and Domenica (Mamie). SURVIVORS Children: Donna (Bob), Carman, Anna (Tim), and Diane (Glynn) Grandchildren: Kristofer, Laurie Ellen (Derek), Lindsay (Phil), Angela (Jon), Alison (Kevin), Brent and Rick Great Grandchildren: Trinity, Sophia, Evin and Isabelle Brother: Anthony "Tut" Also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews.
